Rwanda
Rwanda 1994-1995
Australia deployed personnel as part of a UN effort to Rwanda in the aftermath of the country’s 1994 genocide. A medical contingent with infantry protection, helped re-establish the Kigali Central Hospital in the Rwandan capital, while combat engineers cleared land mines. Australian soldiers witnessed the 1995 massacre in Kibeho.

At 13 years, Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War was its longest commitment to an armed conflict. Almost 60,000 Australians, including ground troops and air force and navy personnel, served in Vietnam; 521 died as a result of the war and over 3,000 were wounded.

Korean War
Korean War 1950-1953
Members of the Australian armed services were part of a United Nations multinational force that fought against North Korea following its invasion of South Korea on 25 June 1950. There were 340 casualties. The war ended on 27 July 1953, but an Australian peacekeeping presence remained in the country until 1957.
